In the residential conversion of an 1890s Kensington warehouse, the architect had one non-negotiable requirement: keep the existing structural concrete slab and finish it in place. No additional floor build-up was acceptable — ceiling height was paramount.
Bomanite Patene Teres, the Custom Polishing system, processes existing concrete through sequential dry-diamond grinding passes. Each pass uses finer grit until the slab progresses from matte to semi-gloss to a mirror-reflective finish — no coatings or toppings applied.
The 980 m² result complements the building's cast-iron columns and exposed brickwork perfectly. The project was shortlisted for a RIBA London Regional Award that year.
