Sustainable Surface Systems
Grassroad®
Plastic honeycomb cell paving made from recycled polypropylene. Up to 95% grass cover, fast installation and full permeability — the natural choice for infrequent traffic applications.
What is Grassroad?
Lightweight,green and permeable.
Grassroad is the original plastic honeycomb cell paving system developed in the USA in the early 1980s, with Grass Concrete Limited holding the exclusive European licence. Injection-moulded from recycled polypropylene, the interlocking units combine with established grass to form a tensile paving layer — achieving up to 95% visible grass surface cover.
The system is designed for infrequent traffic use. Structural capacity comes from the combination of honeycomb cells and the grass matrix forming a tensile layer. To maintain performance, infrequent or rotated traffic use is recommended to allow grass growth to recover.
Note: Grassroad vs Grasscrete
Grassroad is plastic, lightweight and for infrequent use. Grasscrete is cast concrete, rated to 40t GVW and designed for continuous traffic.

Advantages
01
95% Grass Cover
The honeycomb cells achieve up to 95% open surface area — almost the entire surface is covered by grass or ground cover.
02
Lightweight & Fast Install
Just 0.90 kg per unit. Units fold into position and can be laid rapidly without specialist equipment or heavy machinery.
03
Recycled Material
UK-manufactured units are injection-moulded from post-consumer recycled polypropylene — a lower embodied carbon choice.
04
Full Permeability
Rainwater infiltrates directly to ground, reducing urban flood risk and meeting SUDS drainage requirements.
05
Structural Efficiency
Reduced sub-base depth and often no edge restraint needed. Large areas delivered at significantly lower logistics cost.
06
Heat Island Reduction
Grass cover significantly reduces surface temperature versus asphalt and actively sequesters CO₂.
Applications
The right use scenarios.
Grassroad performs best where traffic loading is infrequent. For continuous heavy vehicle traffic, Grasscrete is the appropriate system.
OVR
Overspill Car Parks
Infrequently used overflow parking for events, sports venues and institutional sites.
FIR
Fire Access Routes
Invisible green access routes for fire and emergency vehicles — bearing load when needed, green otherwise.
VRG
Verge Hardening
Permeable green surface for road verge strips and bays subject to occasional vehicle overrun.
AMN
Amenity & Recreation
Firm, permeable and green ground surface for parks, school grounds and public open spaces.
Installation Process
01
Sub-base Preparation
Free-draining granular material, Type 1. Min. 100mm for pedestrians, 150mm for vehicles.
02
Sand Blinding
20mm sharp sand blinding applied to the sub-base surface. No organic material in this layer.
03
Grassroad Units
Units folded into position; side and end interlock system connects adjacent panels.
04
Topsoil & Grass
Voids filled with screened topsoil; sown with Grassmix No.2 seed or quality turf laid.
Topsoil & Grass — Option 1
Fill voids with screened topsoil; top up after settlement and sow with Grassmix No.2 at 30g/m². Do not traffic until the grass is fully established.
Topsoil & Grass — Option 2
Fill voids with screened topsoil to within 12mm of the surface. Lay quality turf with joints offset from the paver joints; lightly roll to imprint turf into the pavers.
