Natural Stone vs Decorative Concrete: A 15-Year Cost Analysis for Architects

When an architect proposes natural Italian travertine instead of a Bomanite system, the initial figures can appear to favour the stone on a per-m² basis. The 15-year picture reverses the conclusion entirely.
Initial Installation Cost
Quality travertine flooring in Istanbul conditions: 180–320 USD/m² (material + labour + grouting). Equivalent Bomanite Imprint Concrete: 95–160 USD/m². Difference: 45–50% first-cost advantage to Bomanite.
Annual Maintenance
Travertine: surface sealing twice a year (25–40 USD/m²/year), periodic joint repointing (50–80 USD/m² every 5 years), stain treatment. Bomanite: penetrating hardener once a year (8–15 USD/m²/year), standard commercial cleaning sufficient.
15-Year Total (across 1,000 m²)
Travertine: installation 250,000 + maintenance 525,000 = 775,000 USD. Bomanite: installation 130,000 + maintenance 135,000 = 265,000 USD. Difference: Bomanite is 66% lower total cost.
