Urban Heat Islands and Pervious Concrete: A Concrete Solution for Cities

15 December 2025

Urban heat island effect means surface temperatures in dense city areas are 5–12°C higher than surrounding rural land. In Istanbul, this gap exceeds 15°C in some districts. Conventional black asphalt at 50°C ambient temperature can push surface temperatures to 65–70°C.

The Cooling Mechanism of Pervious Concrete
Bomanite Pervious Concrete's high-void structure cools in two ways: first, rainwater evaporation — when the surface is wet, evaporation absorbs heat and cools the area. Second, the light aggregate colour reflects solar radiation. Measured result: 8–12°C surface temperature reduction versus asphalt.

A Practical Roadmap for Urban Planning
Municipal car parks, pedestrian zones and school yards are priority target areas for pervious concrete. Converting 1,000 m² to pervious surface reduces the surrounding microclimate temperature by an average of 1.5–2°C — cumulative effect becomes significant at scale.
